I have been an artist all my life. My Mom kept my drawings that I did when I was three years old, filled with evidence that I saw the world differently than most. My middle and high school years were filled with art classes that I could do anything I chose to do. The teachers spoiled me. I won awards locally and Nationally. ART – This was who I am and what I do. I was offered a scholarship to the prestigious Pasadena Art Center but I turned it down. I wanted to pursue a life of music and ministry. I couldn’t see how I could use art for God.
God has never let me forget the design that He has for my life. Sure, I thought I knew better and chose a life in the music world, instead. I dabbled with my art on the side. It was still a major part of me and I would sell portraits and paintings here and there. With digital downloads looming, the music distribution industry began its collapse and, in 2008, I found myself unemployed and undesirable in the workforce. At age 50, I had to decide what I was going to be when I grew up. I cried out to God and, well, He has never let me forget the design He has for my life.
A few years ago, Rick Cua, a dear friend and President/CEO of Kingdom Bound Ministry, came to me and told me that the music aspect has been wonderful but Kingdom Bound has been wanting to grow in other forms of art. He asked me to come out and speak about art and God. I spoke and walked people through some drawing exercises a few years before but I felt that the event was missing something. A short time later, God began developing my teaching into something powerful and more beautiful. Today, I KNOW how to use art for God and fully embrace the design that He has for my life.
I believe EVERYONE can paint. I prove it week after week to those who say they can’t draw stick people, people with little or no experience. Not only do they do well, they continually come back for more. Deep down, we are creative beings, created by a creative God in His likeness. All I have to do is provide an environment and watch God do His thing. People look at the painting we will do and say, "There is no way I can do that!" The truth is they can and they do, as long as they trust me, follow my steps and keep pace they will leave with a painting of which they can be proud.
I sincerely hope you will paint with me. I promise that you will never look at painting, nature, LIFE nor our Creator in the same manner ever again. Take a moment to see what others say about my process on this video. As I heard one of my guests say as they were leaving, "It’s the MOST FUN you’ll have with a paint brush!"
